On Monday, the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson announced that England's second national lockdown will be lifted on 2nd December as he laid down the new Winter Plan.

Yesterday, we heard the Minister for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock share news of the which areas would be placed in to each of the local restriction tiers, these will be reviewed on 16thDecember.

In England, 'Personal care' including salons and spas, and gyms and pools can reopen in all tiers from 00:01 on Wednesday 2nd December, a day earlier than was originally planned.

In addition to this the UK Spa Association have confirmed with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) that No.10 have agreed for saunas and steam rooms to reopen in tier 3. This will be updated in the guidance shortly.

We are pleased with the government decision to allow 'personal care' to reopen across all tiers and are appreciative that our colleagues at BEIS have been advocates for the UKSA in challenging the decision to close saunas and steam rooms in tier 3 with a successful outcome. Furthermore, they have supported us to secure a special exemption in the regulations which will be laid in law to ensure that all spas, even in a tier 3 area where the primary hotel business may be closed, can legally operate.

There are discussions in progress with central government regarding the hospitality regulations for food and drink which we service which we realise is of great importance to you and your operation. We will update you when we have more news.

We truly appreciate that it can be overwhelming to navigate through these changes and you may have many questions that we are doing our best to answer for you as quickly as possible. Rest assured we are doing all we can to facilitate a clear pathway for you.

It’s testament to you and your teams that there is little to no evidence of COVID-19 transmission linked to our sector. This has been integral in our work to lobby for this much needed outcome.

We continue to work closely with the devolved administrations in Wales and Scotland to secure a date for reopening sauna and steam rooms, and with the Northern Ireland Executive who entered in to a new period of restrictions yesterday which sees the closure of close-contact services including spas until 11th December, and the introduction and use of the COV5 fine for businesses who fail to adhere to the “circuit break” requirements.

We implore you to continue to operate in a COVID secure way and continue to observe the guidance in your respective areas over the coming weeks and months as we strive to maintain public health, raise the reputation of the sector and aid the short and long term recovery and well-being of the nation.

On behalf of the UKSA I’d like to take this opportunity to pass on our heartfelt thanks and tell you how proud we are of the hard work and dedication that you have demonstrated in upholding such high standards and compliance, we are honoured to represent you at government level.

Now let’s get back to doing what we do best!!
